Whereas researchers have examined various (alt) textual content for social media and information contexts, few have studied the standing and challenges for authoring alt textual content of figures in computing-related publications. These figures are distinct, usually conveying dense visible data, and should necessitate distinctive accessibility options. Accordingly, we explored the way to assist authors in creating alt textual content in computing publications—specifically within the discipline of human-computer interplay (HCI). We performed two research: (1) an evaluation of 300 lately revealed figures at a common HCI convention (ACM CHI), and (2) interviews with 10 researchers in HCI and associated fields who’ve various ranges of expertise writing alt textual content. Our findings characterize the prevalence, high quality, and patterns of current determine alt textual content and captions. We additional establish challenges authors encounter, describing their workflow obstacles and confusions round the way to compose alt textual content for advanced figures. We conclude by outlining a analysis agenda on course of, schooling, and tooling alternatives to enhance alt textual content in computing-related publications.
